The Chinook Elementary PTSA sponsors several school programs and events. Find out more about them below.
Book Fair (Moderate Time Commitment, runs throughout the year)
Chair: Kelly and April
Would you love to put affordable books into the hands of our Chinook students? This committee does just that by organizing and running our Fall and Spring Scholastic Book Fair.
We need volunteers to work with our Scholastic representative, organize book buying opportunities and organize volunteer schedules to work at either our Fall or Spring event, along with set up and tear down of the displays.
Box Tops (Light Time Commitment, mostly at home, runs throughout the year)
Co-Chairs: Andi and Katie
General Mill’s Box Tops for Education award cash grants to schools. Chinook PTSA participates by having our families clip and send to school box tops from eligible products to turn into these programs for redemption.
We need volunteers for coordination of the collection process for these programs, as well as the submission to the programs for redemption. Volunteers are also needed for “at home” trimming of labels when needed.
Get your box tops collection sheet here or you can go to Documents and Forms on the Main Menu and print out a copy there.
Dine & Donate Nights (Light time commitment, mostly at home, runs throughout the year)
Simply put, we work with local restaurants and eateries to set up nights where each restaurant contributes a percentage of their sales to Chinook.
If you are interested in helping set these nights up, this is an easy volunteering opportunity for stay at home, or working parents. Contact us to learn more!
Fall Festival featuring Trunk or Treat (Moderate time commitment, limited time frame)
Due to popular demand, we are bringing back Fall Festival for it’s second year at Chinook. Fall Festival will be like a mini carnival. It will feature games, bounce houses, food, and bake sales. Along with a Trunk or Treat set up in the Red House playground. We are very excited to host this again for our Chinook community, and are looking for many hands to help us make it successful. If you are interested in helping out in any way, please contact us! Fall Festival will take place the evening of Friday October 25th from 6-8!
Family Arts & Science Night (Moderate time commitment, limited time frame)
Family Arts & Science Night is a fun filled evening that focuses on exciting enrichment activities and projects appropriate for each grade level. During the evening your student will enjoy creating “make and take” art projects that involve the whole family.
This years Family Arts & Science Night will take place on Friday March 20th, 2020.
Volunteers are needed for help with art projects, set up, and clean up. No art experience is necessary, just lend a hand!
Contact us if you are interested in helping!
Family Dance Night (Moderate time commitment, limited time frame)
Enjoy a night out with the family with dancing and games led by an awesome DJ. This is a free event for families to just come have fun together and see friends within the Chinook Community. This year’s Family Dance Night will take place on Friday February 14th, 2020
Giving Tree (Moderate time commitment, limited time frame)
Each year, our school counselor picks 6-7 families within the Chinook Community that are in need of some help. We ask those families, who are kept anonymous, to create Christmas wish lists for their family. Those lists are then posted at school, and the rest of the chinook families are given the opportunity to purchase these items so that those families can have a nice holiday with the things that they need.
Lists will be posted sometime in late November. We will need volunteers to help coordinate and sort the donations.
In addition to gifts, we will also be looking for donations of gift wrap and tape so the families can enjoy wrapping the gifts themselves.
Payback Books (Moderate time commitment, limited time frame)
Another big fundraiser for the PTSA is selling Payback Coupon books, featuring hundreds of discounts to Vancouver restaurants and retailers.
This years payback book sale with start on Friday, August 30th, and continue through till late September.
Original Art Works (Light time commitment, limited time frame)
Original Art Works is a popular yearly fundraiser. Students create art pieces in their Art class and Original Art Works then assists you in creating items such as mouse pads, coffee mugs, t-shirts and more to showcase your students art.
Students will be working on their art in early fall, and items will be available to purchase during mid October, with an early December delivery.
If you are interested in helping us coordinate this fundraiser, please let us know!
Pie Sale (Light time commitment, Sales happen 2x per year)
Coordinate the sale and distribute purchased pies from the Willamette Pie Company. Pie sale happens in the fall and spring.
Read N Lead (Moderate time commitment, runs throughout the year)
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you ‘ll go”
– Dr Seuss
The possibilities are endless when children harbor a love of reading. To help encourage our Chinook Elementary students to read more, and often, the PTSA created the Read-N-Lead program.
Each month students are given the opportunity to record how many minutes they have read (or been read to for the Kindergarteners) on their Read-N-Lead calendars. Once the month is over the students submit the calendars to their teachers. PTSA volunteers then tally and record the minutes for each student and class. The minimum goals for reading per grade level are as follows:
|Kindergarten / First Grade||300 Minutes per month|
|Second / Third Grade||400 Minutes per month|
|Fourth / Fifth Grade||500 Minutes per month|
Read N Lead will start in October 2019. At that time, we will have for your convenience, read n lead calendars on our site, in the docs and forms section.
Spirit Wear (Light time commitment, limited time frame)
Be a proud Wolf Pup and purchase Wolf Pup wear! Orders are placed at the beginning of the school year. Choose from a variety of shirts and sweatshirts.
Spring Plant Sale (Light time commitment, limited time frame)
A fundraiser in the Spring, before Mother’s Day.
We need volunteers to help coordinate by distributing and collecting order sheets, and organizing and handing out the plants when they come in.
More information on the fundraiser, and volunteering opportunities will be available in early spring 2019.
Smencil-Grams (Light time commitment, sale happens 2x/year)
Smencil-grams is a fun, easy fundraiser that we recently brought to Chinook. Smencils are scented pencils, that come in a plastic tube to keep the scent fresh. The pencils are fully made with recycled materials, and the kids love them.
For Thanksgiving this year you can tell your student how “thankful” you are for them. You can purchase a smencil-gram for $2, and your child will be delivered a Smencil along with a cute note from you. At Valentines, we also send valentine themed smencil-grams.
Staff Appreciation & Hospitality
Hospitality: Jennifer with Jen
This committee provides healthy snacks, treats and surprises during heavy activity weeks for teachers and staff (parent teacher conferences, and teacher appreciation week). Though there is a budget for these events, we also rely on parent donations of food, drinks, and supplies.
Below are some of the major times we will be looking for help:
- Conference Days Pot Luck- In October the teachers hold 2 days of parent/teacher conferences where they are at school and working from early morning till the evening. On these days we like to provide them with a buffet of soups to keep them going and help them not have to leave for food. This is one of the most appreciated and popular staff events we host.
- Staff Appreciation Week- May 4th kicks off Staff Appreciation week in 2020. During this week we will provide daily lunches, snacks or breakfasts with a theme to the staff. In addition we will coordinate daily themes for students and parents to show appreciation to the Chinook Staff.
Other Special Events include Teacher/Staff Birthdays, and staff recognition.
We need volunteers to donate items, and also coordination of the various activities and volunteers.
In addition to Staff Appreciation we will be incorporating a Hospitality team to coordinate provide snacks and refreshments for the Welcome Back Ice Cream Social, First Day Coffee, and General PTSA Meetings.
